An institution for the long work of civic and political leadership
The Patrice Lumumba Center for Human Dignity is a newly formed Pan-African nonpartisan civic and political leadership institution based in the Washington, DC Metro Area. It identifies, prepares, and supports a new generation of African public actors, and it builds the institutional habits — transparency, competence, and accountability — that principled public power requires.
Our Mission
The Center treats civic and political leadership as a discipline that can be taught, practiced, and held to a public standard. It works through education, mentorship, and applied projects rather than partisan or electoral activity.
Its inaugural work begins in Nigeria with the Lumumba Fellows, the Center’s first cohort. What that program is, and how fellows are formed, is set out under Programs and the Fellowship.
Diaspora-Supported, Nigeria-Coauthored
The Center is based in the United States and coauthored in Nigeria. Its U.S. base provides compliance discipline, public-systems experience, and diaspora technical support. Its Nigeria-based fellows, partners, and contributors hold local context authority over what is built and how it is used.
This is deliberate. Diaspora institutions can supply capital, method, and infrastructure, but legitimacy and direction must remain with the people closest to the work. The program is supported from the diaspora and coauthored on the ground.
Leadership
The Center is chaired by Pelumi Olatinpo, who serves as Chairman and Acting Head of Organization. Born in Nigeria and based in the Washington, DC area, he is a civic technologist, public-service commissioner, and poet whose work engages the practical machinery of public systems.
Founding & Governance
The Center is a newly formed institution and is building its founding governance architecture — bylaws, a conflict-of-interest policy, financial controls, and an independent board structure appropriate to a nonprofit civic institution.
The Center is nonpartisan: it does not operate as a party, campaign, or candidate committee. Read the full nonpartisan statement and controls →
